John and Marge Butterfield
John and Marge Butterfield's musical journey is deeply intertwined with their extensive travels, which have enriched their repertoire with a diverse array of genres. Meeting and marrying in college, their shared passion for music ignited when John gifted Marge a guitar as a wedding present. Their post-graduation goal of living and working in different countries led them to a remote settlement in the Dominican Republic, where they immersed themselves in Spanish and honed their vocal harmonies inspired by artists like the Everly Brothers and Peter, Paul and Mary.
While In Suriname, South America, a chance encounter with a Belgian banjo player sparked a lasting musical friendship, which also led to Marge beginning to learn the bass. Transitioning back to Vermont, they immersed themselves in various musical scenes, from choral groups to country and rock bands. Throughout their journey, their repertoire has expanded to cater to diverse audiences, uniting them through the universal language of music.
Performing under different names over the years, they are now known simply as "The Butterfields," captivating audiences with their rich vocal harmonies accompanied by acoustic guitar and bass, delivering a dynamic blend of traditional folk, blues, Caribbean, popular and contemporary favorites.
